best
golden retriever ever
in a bar with a beer with a boy with a beer i heard it first
derrida dead
and i remember thinking there are some places one never forgets
because the news of some deaths is always remembered
michael hutchence lead singer of inxs
night before the most important tennis match of sophomore year
in my bed in my parents' attic
grandma soph mother to my favorite aunt
night before her funeral i was just dropping home for a visit
in the kitchen at the counter
paul slappy benefactor to some friends in iowa
night before big family reunion plans to go bowling
in the living room at the computer
merlin best golden retriever ever
night before they put him to sleep i was away at college freshman year
in my dorm at my desk
amber second best golden retriever ever
night before they put her to sleep my girlfriend and i deciding to separate
smoking on somebody's porch
but i cannot do derrida's introductory label
and i had nothing to do the day after the news
so in mourning i told a lot of jokes
well my first thought was
why couldn't it be judy butler
well my first thought was
good thing i got rejected by u of c irvine
in a bar with a beer with a boy with a beer i heard it first
derrida dead
and this is all mostly true
if you accept that mostly true and mostly false make much of the same exceptions
which perhaps derrida would have said only no one can quite say for sure
what he said what he meant what he felt how he lived
which is why the news will gladly cover christopher reeve's last gasp instead
the best jokes are the lingering and unlaughable kind
derrida left a legacy but we cannot say that it is one to speak of
which perhaps derrida would have said only no one can quite say for sure
